Register for Smartwater

In 2016, Police Scotland suggested that Langbank would be a good location to use Smartwater crime prevention technology. The Police have suggested to the Community Council that if there were enough interested residents that they would support the implementation. A first batch was supplied to households across the village who had noted their interest.

What is Smart Water?
Households that participate will be given a small amount of invisible uv fluorescent ink. Each batch of ink is coded and is a unique mix of different uv inks where no two batches are identical. The householder paints a small amount of ink on their valuable items (typically phones, laptops, jewellery, bikes, golf clubs etc). The unique ink code is then registered to the address. If a stolen item is recovered then it is uv scanned and the return address established. However, more importantly, it provides an evidential link from the person with the stolen item to the theft from the premises. Police Scotland and Smartwater both said they have a 100% conviction record for criminals caught with Smartwater ink on stolen property. Police Scotland tell us that criminals are well aware of the power of Smartwater and avoid areas using Smartwater technology. For this reason the use of Smartwater within a community is publicised and is a powerful deterrent to crime. Smartwater signs would be installed within the village along with window stickers.

Langbank Community Council have registered our interest with the Police and have received a grant  to help with the costs and the signs. It is expected that with Police support households that wish to participate will pay a one-off charge of £12 each (normally £50 per year) for the uv paint and to register the paint code to their property.

The order will be placed by the Langbank Community Council who will also distribute the ink, record codes, answer any questions and advise on use of the ink.
